Did you know that native grass roots can grow up to 8 feet deep?!

They form a dense mat that, over time, helped to build the rich soils of the American prairies. These powerful root systems have major advantages in urban environments as well: preventing erosion on steep slopes, capturing and holding stormwater and helping the plant survive hot, dry summer weather. Native grasses are also highly ornamental, with textures and colors that enhance any landscape.

Needless to say, we love native grasses! That’s why we’re installing a micro-prairie on the front of the CGC for the whole world to admire. Join us to create this brand-new native plant garden along Reading Road. We need your help to clear out weeds and plant dozens of grasses and wildflowers. Once its finished, we’ll have a space that’s as low-maintenance as it is beautiful.

This workday is for anyone interested in learning more about native plants, conservation and ecologically minded gardening. You'll gain hands-on experience in preparing and installing a new micro prairie garden. And remember, no prior training is necessary to attend our workdays!

The ability to kneel and use hand tools is recommended but not required. Please bring gloves if you have them and a water bottle. Wear closed-toe shoes and clothes you’re comfortable getting dirty. All other tools and materials will be provided.
